Ana's Favourite Places in Tenerife
A Trip to Punta de Teno
Taking the Guagua from Buenavista del Norte to Tenerife's Wild Western Tip
Tenerife is full of special places – some are well known, while others are discovered by following the recommendations of the people who call the island home. That's why we are starting a new series in the Jardin de la Paz Journal: our team members share their personal favourite places in Tenerife.
First up is Ana from our team. Her recommendation for a varied day trip takes you to the wild northwest of the island: Buenavista del Norte, Punta de Teno, followed by lunch and, to finish the day, an ice cream in Garachico.
A journey combining the Atlantic Ocean, volcanic landscapes, Canarian cuisine and a historic town centre.
From Buenavista del Norte to Punta de Teno by Guagua
The trip begins in Buenavista del Norte. From the Estación de Guaguas, bus line 369 takes you directly towards Punta de Teno.
The journey itself is part of the experience: for around 20 minutes, the guagua winds its way through the spectacular landscape of Tenerife's far northwest. The road passes steep cliffs and landscapes that are quite different from the lush green valleys around La Orotava.
Access to Punta de Teno is regulated in order to protect this sensitive landscape. For visitors, bus line 369 is the designated connection from Buenavista del Norte to Punta de Teno. A single journey currently costs €1 per person.
Our tip: Be sure to check the current timetable before setting off. Departure times vary depending on the day of the week, and access to Teno may be temporarily restricted in bad weather.
Punta de Teno: Where Rocks Meet the Atlantic
Once you arrive at Punta de Teno, the landscape changes yet again.
The lush green slopes of the north give way to a barren, almost desert-like landscape. Cacti and other plants grow between the rocks, while the Atlantic opens up before you. Blue and green, rock and water, sky and sea – here, Tenerife reveals one of its most untouched and rugged sides.
It's worth taking your time to explore the surroundings on foot. A short path leads up to the Teno Lighthouse, offering beautiful views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.
And if the sight of the crystal-clear water makes you want to cool off, come prepared:
Don't forget your swimsuit and snorkel!
Depending on the conditions, the clear waters around Punta de Teno invite you to take a refreshing swim or go snorkelling. As always, keep an eye on the current Atlantic conditions and only enter the water where it is safe to do so.
Picnic or Lunch with a Sea View?
For Ana, a trip to Punta de Teno also includes taking a little break. If you enjoy travelling spontaneously, pack a picnic and enjoy it with a view of the Atlantic.
Alternatively, take the guagua back to Buenavista del Norte and combine your trip with lunch.
Ana's restaurant recommendation: El Burgado.
The restaurant is located at Playa de Las Arenas, perched on the rocks directly beside the sea. The municipality of Buenavista del Norte describes its setting as a terrace on a rocky promontory overlooking Punta de Teno. The menu includes, among other things, fresh fish and rice dishes.
For Ana, however, it is above all the location that makes this place special: sitting right beside the water, watching the spray and experiencing the Atlantic at such close quarters makes the visit a memorable part of the day.
The tapas are a nice addition – but really, you come here above all for the spectacular setting by the sea.
To Finish the Day: Ice Cream and Canarian Architecture in Garachico
On the way back, another of Ana's favourite places awaits: Garachico.
This historic town is one of the most beautiful in the north of Tenerife. It's a pleasure to stroll through its streets, surrounded by traditional houses with their characteristic Canarian balconies.
And, of course, no visit would be complete without an ice cream.
Ana recommends Heladería Artesanal Italiana Fragola on Avenida Tomé Cano. Garachico's tourism office lists the ice cream parlour as a provider of artisan ice cream and names it as the number one ice cream parlour in Garachico, as well as one of the 16 best ice cream parlours in Spain in 2019.
With an ice cream in hand, you can then wander through the charming little streets of Garachico before heading back to Jardin de la Paz.
A Day Full of Contrasts
What Ana particularly loves about this trip is its variety: a historic town, a spectacular bus journey, wild Atlantic coastline, volcanic landscapes, the sea, good food and, finally, an ice cream.
And perhaps that's one of the loveliest ways to discover Tenerife: not simply ticking off the major sights, but taking inspiration from the personal favourite places of the people who live and work here.
Buenavista del Norte – Punta de Teno – El Burgado – Garachico: A day trip we are happy to recommend to our guests staying in the north of Tenerife.
